First reason was because of the
industrial revolution. Second Factories needed raw materials such as rubber,
cotton, oil, tin, and copper. Also There was a demand for tea, sugar, and
cocoa. Third, industries needed new markets for their products. Factories were
turning out more goods then people at home could afford to buy. Many leaders
believed new markets could be found in areas that were not industrially
developed. Fourth was Nationalism. Many people thought colonies would add to
their country’s power. The newly founded countries of Italy and Germany wanted
to catch up with Great Britain, France, and other established colonial powers. Japan and the United States
wanted to become as important as the colonial powers. Fifth, was the belief
that western countries had a duty to “civilize” the “backward” peoples of the
world. These westerners believed they had a mission to spread Christianity and
Industrial Revolution everywhere.
Trevor - good information, but rewrite this so it starts with a topic sentence and so that you don't have any fragments.
